Our Story
Take a look at the Ruby Watts family story through the eyes of Sophia Marks, the owner
1985
“Hello Ruby”
It all started with my dad’s favourite song—Cowgirl in the Sand by Neil Young. He played it on repeat on our old stereo, and one lyric always stuck with him:
"Hello Ruby in the Dust."
He always dreamed of opening a restaurant in London, and just like that, Ruby in the Dust was born.
1986
Ruby’s wild days
That dream became a reality when my parents opened a restaurant in Camden. But this wasn’t just any restaurant—it was a table-dancing, burger, and tequila kind of place.
Ruby became more than just a name. She was a vibe—wild, free-spirited, and unforgettable. To this day, some of our customers remember those nights at Ruby in the Dust—she’s become a bit of a London legend.
1989-2013
Ruby’s family home
After a few years, Ruby swapped the dance floor for something a little quieter. My parents moved to the countryside, raised four kids, and kept working in the hospitality industry.
My mum, a natural talent in interior design, styled our home beautifully. That’s when she started dreaming of something new—her own business.

2014
Ruby’s return
With us kids all grown up, my mum and auntie teamed up to continue the family legacy. That’s how Ruby Watts was born—Ruby for the family heritage, Watts (because, well...).
Their first shop opened in a retail barn in Hurstpierpoint, West Sussex. This time, Ruby wasn’t about wild nights—she was about timeless antique lighting and stylish interiors.
2015
Ruby’s high street debut
By 2015, Ruby Watts had a high street home, and I officially joined the business as Brand Manager.
We built a loyal customer base, offering unique vintage lighting and plenty of chats over coffee. Winter was our favourite season—the shop was filled with festive music, the smell of mince pies, and warm, glowing lights.
2016
Ruby’s evolving
My mum and auntie planted the seeds, and I started watering them. As the brand grew, I took on the role of owner and director, shaping Ruby Watts for the future.
We gave the branding a refresh—elegant, minimal, and modern. Alongside our antique pieces, we introduced designer lighting, blending vintage charm with contemporary style.
But some things didn’t change. The shop was still a warm, inviting space, where customers stayed for hours, chatting about life, interiors, and lighting. That’s when we introduced our lighting consultancy service—helping people design their dream homes, one light at a time.
2020
Ruby’s moving online
It was time for Ruby Watts to go online.
We wanted to bring our lighting to everyone, so we launched our online shop—a space where you can browse, get inspired, and shop from anywhere. Our social media channels became a hub for daily design inspo and expert lighting tips.
And don’t worry, we’re still here for you! Whether it's a quick chat, a video call, or a home visit, our bespoke lighting consultancy is always an option.
Ruby Watts has evolved, but one thing remains the same—we’re all about warmth, great design, and making your space feel like home.
We’re always dreaming up new ideas and can’t wait to see what’s next —Ruby’s story is far from over.
